All About Firewire and 1394:
The IEEE-1394 interface standard specification is also known as "FireWire" by Apple Computer, Inc. (who also invented the interface) and as "iLink" or "iLink 1394" by Sony Corp. All these terms refer to the same thing. The goal for the future of personal computing is for all peripheral devices to be connected outside the PC. This means that instead of opening the case and adding a circuit board, any PC user can simply PLUG any device into a 1394 port and begin using the device. 1394 devices can be daisy chained. You can have up to 63 devices connected simultaneously. 1394 combines Plug and Play and Hot Swapping capabilities with high-speed data throughput to make this goal attainable.
External ports of the past have not had the high speed data bus required for data intensive applications such as hard disk storage, high quality audio and video and data communications. 1394 provides the fastest data throughput most users have ever experienced on their PC.
